The investigation commenced following the philosophy of the wonky, mutant fruit. As humans learn, experience is absorbed as truth, thus producing expectation predominantly governed by surface qualities, applicable across not only fruit but also people and objects. Wonky fruit, regardless of their insides, are neglected and treated as incorrect, perhaps even dangerous, based on fruits as we know them. Why does value change when surface does? Because something looks incorrect, does it mean it is? Or does expectation inhibit potential of the disregarded, disfigured and forgotten. To carry this idea into a jewellery context, I decided to alter one of the most obviously functional items of security and adornment, that being the safety pin. The iconic pin lends itself to particular handing and function; to spring open, to pin and to hold. I decided to alter its structure to allow surface to prove itself as fickle, whilst our expectations are actively challenged, and objects silently deceive us upon handling. It is likely the eleven pins will be handled as safety pins to begin with, expected to perform in a particular way based on their distinct qualities, being their base loop to provide tension and their clasp. However, after handling several, the ‘safety’ pins are eventually seen as just pins as we no longer force them to be something else based on their iconic surface. You can’t hold expectation about anything or anyone, they should be able to quietly prove themselves without prior judgement.

Everything in Moderation; Beating the Bed

The bed is the most nourishing yet destructive place. One must know when to stop, like blowing bubble gum, before it all falls apart. The title being “Everything in Moderation; Beating the Bed” suggests that protection is valuable however over protection is detrimental to your function. Given this realisation, I created a three-piece collection inspired by these facets. The first, “Protection is Suppression”, is a ring visualising the flattening of instability, only for pressure to build elsewhere. The second, “Protection is Hiding”, is a stud earring involving two hiding stones, one behind the ear and the other within a translucent volume, hiding away from an embedded lens catching only its bottom quarter. You know it’s there, but it doesn’t want to be seen. The third, “Protection is Counterproductive”, is a ring composed of what seems to be a piece of tape however beneath lies the impression of a ring. The ring does not need additional support to be a ring otherwise its beauty is obstructed, it doesn’t need your input to exist and to function, even if you believe it does.

White Boy of the Month

The “White Boy of the Month” trend describes the cycle of popular obsessions with white male celebrities. A fluctuating, disingenuous distraction from our lives, we absorb solely through screen-based media. In exploring the relationship between surface and structure to cultivate meaning, I noticed that amending either paves the way for distorted truths. Desirability is reliant on the pairing of surface and structure, altering one changes this entirely. Given my newfound ability to distort images and the idea of these “white boys”, I selected fragments of peoples favourite white boys and destabilised their conventional attractiveness with the hollow cube as a tool, criticising our distorted view of said people. In celebrating fragments of their faces a disconnected being is created, critiquing the incorrect impressions we form.

Folklore, involving the transfer of meaningful information through generations, denies later participants of truth, resulting in faulty implementation to your day to day. My chosen form of folklore to investigate was my inner monologue, written within journals acting as primary research, a truth only applicable to me. As the eldest of four, the advice and tales I tell my siblings of my own experiences, in hopes of aiding theirs, are a murky blur of my own learned truths from generations before, only becoming increasingly impersonal as they subconsciously embody them. My siblings and I are slowly becoming iterations of oneself on this current trajectory that I aim to intercept following this investigation. In producing a name tag, aimed at my youngest sister, reading an incomprehensible combination of the names of us four, she has now become us all in one indistinguishable being. The murky girl now anxious and confused navigates the world, lacking the choice of opting out.

Best Before
Eggshell Waste, Milk and Ink

Waste remains somewhat taboo, especially within the context of jewellery. The objects we wear closest to the body are expected to endure the harshness of our day to day, which is why metal has long been seen as the most legitimate medium. In rebellion, I have developed a composite that challenges the permanence of jewellery through the drastic pairing of notorious permanence with notorious fragility: a signet ring formed entirely from eggshell waste.

Heads or Heads?

A game of chance. Symbolic of Sudan's civil war, the sides represent two military leaders, while the rim stands for civilians caught in the crossfires. The 'coin' will never land on its rim, reflecting the unlikelihood of citizens deciding their future, emphasizing the country's bleak fate. At the conflicts heart lies territory, leaving no space for the people. The medal, worn to signify beliefs, forces you to align with a divided stance you didn't choose. Medals protect the chest but attempting neutrality, wearing it on its side, exposes vulnerability, reducing the likelihood of civilian success by choice and by fate of the flip.

I Hate Brushing My Teeth

Drawing inspiration from repeated forms, I scrutinized repeated rituals, defining repetition as a nuisance. Not only are we inconveniently obliged to brush our teeth twice a day, but we also must brush all 24; a repeated form, being our teeth, discovered in a repeated ritual. This tight bracelet bites down on the wrist once the toothbrush clasp is closed, activating the irritation in a tangible realm.

Everything Happens for a Reason

The rings before you embody the often cathartic idea that ‘everything happens for a reason’. The reassurance we feel in allowing external forces to determine our fate resembles that of a snooker ball, colliding with others only to eventually find their hole. The rings incarnate 10 different stories of 10 different pairs and the way they fatefully found eachother, thus each individual ring symbolic of a person. The assortment may seem unsystematic, however in retrospect we must try fit with those we can’t to seek the one we can.
